Figure 268. Gray Catbirds were considered extremely scarce in California during the 1970s, but by the turn of the century their occurrence had become much more routine, resulting in removal of this species from the CBRC review list in 1999. This adult was photographed on 29 October 1996 on Southeast Farallon Island (1997-034; Peter Pyle).

Image3131.TIF

Figure 381. Annual occurrence of the Gray Catbird in California through the end of the review period in 1999. Records increased sharply after 1970 and especially after the early 1980s. The mean number of records per year during the 1970s was 1.6 ± 2.0SD; during the 1980s was 2.7 ± 2.0SD; and during the 1990s was 5.8 ± 4.5SD.

Image3131.TIF

Figure 382. Distribution of 108 Gray Catbirds accepted through 1999, the end of the CBRC review period. The species’ extreme scarcity in the northeast and Central Valley is unsurprising, but the near-absence of records from the northern coast is harder to explain.

This mimid breeds from southwestern British Columbia east to Newfoundland and south across most of the lower 48 states (the distribution is patchy in the West and in Florida). The species winters primarily from coastal southern New England south through the Atlantic and Gulf coast states, along the Gulf coast of Middle America to central Panama, and in the West Indies. It winters casually across most of the United States and southern Canada. Extralimital records on this continent extend north to southern Alaska and northern Canada and south along the Pacific coast to northern Baja California Sur (e.g., NAB 57:122; 59:155). Accidental records exist for the British Isles, Germany, and Belgium (BW 19:492, 494).

California’s first Gray Catbird, a first-fall bird detected on Southeast Farallon Island on the early fall date of 3 September 1884, was collected the following day (Townsend 1885). This bird, among the first eastern vagrants ever recorded in the state, heralded an auspicious legacy for the island. Although 70 years passed until California’s second record, the catbird was found almost every year from 1974 to present (only in 1989 was it not recorded). The rate of occurrence has steadily increased during the past three decades (Figure 381). The large number recorded during the 1990s, including 17 in 1998 alone, precipitated the Gray Catbird’s removal from the CBRC review list.

The Committee accepted numerous records from the southern and central coast, and from vagrant traps in eastern Kern and Inyo Counties, but very few from the Salton Sink, the Central Valley, or anywhere in the state’s northern third (Figure 382). The earliest fall records—24 August 2000 in San Jose, Santa Clara County (NAB 55:100), and 21 August 2005 at Blue Lake, Humboldt County (NAB 60:136)—came after the close of the CBRC’s review period. Nearly two-thirds of the Committee-endorsed catbirds (68 of 108) occurred between 18 September and 18 November, and a minor migratory peak is evident between 24 May and 25 June (Figure 383). At least six individuals have overwintered in California, and the species is unrecorded in early May. Earlier records (e.g., 25 April 1982 in Guadalupe, Santa Barbara County) could involve lingering wintering birds. Given that none has been documented oversummering, various July records may pertain to late spring vagrants.

In light of the Gray Catbird’s widespread North American distribution and generalized habitat requirements, and considering the species’ increasing frequency of occurrence as a migrant in California, observers should be alert to the species’ potential for breeding in the state.
