Figures

Image3131.TIF

Figure 370. All of California’s records of the Yellow-green Vireo have occurred during September and October, with only a few before mid September.

Image3131.TIF

Figure 371. Most of the 82 Yellow-green Vireos accepted through 2003 were recorded along the coast from Marin County southward. Humboldt County’s southern Samoa Peninsula accounts for the two more northerly coastal records, and Galileo Hill in Kern County accounts for half of the six interior records.

Yellow-green Vireo

YELLOW-GREEN VIREO Vireo flavoviridis (Cassin, 1851)

Accepted: 82 (85%)

Treated in Appendix H: no

Not accepted: 14

CBRC review: all records1

Not submitted/reviewed: 13

Color image: none

Following a period of uncertainty regarding this taxon’s relationship to the Red-eyed Vireo—for example, Barlow (1980) and the AOU (1982, 1983) lumped them—Johnson and Zink (1985) seem to have put the issue to rest. This vireo breeds on both slopes of Middle America, from central Sonora and extreme southern Texas (scarce) south to Costa Rica and Panama, and winters in northern South America. Subspecies flavoviridis occupies most of the breeding range except for Sonora and Sinaloa, states that are populated by the less vivid V. f. hypoleucus. The species is casual or accidental on the Baja California Peninsula and in Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, western and central Texas, Louisiana, Alabama (NAB 58:92), Florida, Bermuda, Barbados, and Venezuela. A 13 May 1883 specimen from Godbout, Quebec, has been widely reported in the literature, but the specimen is faded and damaged. Phillips (1991:205) reidentified the specimen as a Red-eyed Vireo × Philadelphia Vireo, but Holder (1996) noted that the specimen’s measurements fall within the lower range for a Yellow-green Vireo and suggested that DNA analysis may be needed to quell the controversy. An apparent Philadelphia Vireo × Red-eyed Vireo was banded and photographed on 20 September 2003 in southern Ontario (NAB 58:171).

The identity of a Yellow-green Vireo collected on 29 September 1887 along the Santa Ana River near Riverside, Riverside County, was verified by Ridgway (1904:146), who noted that the specimen tag gave the collection date as 29 September, not 1 October as originally published by Price (1888). The specimen’s whereabouts are unknown. Nearly a century passed before the next occurrence, but since the mid 1970s this vireo has been a very rare but regular autumn vagrant in the state. More than half of the records accepted through the end of 2003 (44 of 82) have been since 1994 (a mean rate of 4.4 per year during that 10-year period). All records fall between 6 September and 30 October, with a peak in early October (Figure 370), and all but a handful come from the central or southern coast (Figure 371).

The only California record suspected to possibly involve flavoviridis refers to a richly colored 16 September 1996 specimen from San Diego, San Diego County (Unitt 2004). Most records involve first-fall birds, aged primarily by their brown eyes (versus bright cherry-red in adults), but many individuals have not been aged conclusively. Only three records are known to involve adults: Pt. Loma, San Diego County, 15–19 October 1977; Pt. Reyes, Marin County, 30 September 1988; and Harper Dry Lake, San Bernardino County, 2 October 1988 (male, collected).

The field identification of Red-eyed and Yellow-green Vireos was treated by Terrill and Terrill (1981), Erickson and Terrill (1996), and Holder (1996).
